What are classed as standard door sizes?
When we talk about “standard” door sizes in the UK, we’re really referring to a handful of tried-and-tested options that suit most homes.
In England and Wales, 2’6” (30 inches or 762 mm) is a familiar sight. Scottish properties often favour a slightly narrower 726 mm width (around 28.5 inches), especially in older or traditionally built homes.

Standard Internal Door Sizes
Internal door sizes still juggle between imperial and metric measurements. For example, the well-known 2 ft 6 door translates to 762 mm.
In England and Wales, 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are frequently specified, while Scotland often leans towards metric, especially in newer homes, where 2040 mm-high doors are more typical.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
Most front and back door replacements in the UK fall within a familiar range, making them easy to match. A typical external door is 1981 mm high and comes in widths from 610 mm to 926 mm, which is ideal for standard openings and easy swaps.
Want something a little taller? The 2040 mm height, common in modern Scottish developments, is becoming a sought-after choice for that extra sense of space and style.

Standard Sizes by Door Material
Different materials come with different thicknesses. Timber doors usually range between 44–56 mm, composite doors from 44–70 mm, and UPVC doors tend to be slimmer.
