UPVC Door Or Composite Door – Which Is Right For You?

There are many components to a home, and a front door is one of the most important of all for a host of reasons.

It influences the character of a home’s frontage, sets the tone for what’s around and inside, contributes to security, and can sway people’s opinions of a dwelling.

Thinking of it like that may lead you to conclude that it’s time you upgraded your existing entryway for a brand-new UPVC or composite door.

UPVC doors are well-known to most people, but composite doors perhaps not as much. So, let’s start with an explanation of composite doors.

What is a composite door?

Doors defined as ‘composite’ consist of a range of materials, including UPVC, wood, foam and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.

Inclusion of wood is partly how the realistic woodgrain effect displayed by a composite door is accomplished. The outer GRP skin helps give it immense robustness and weatherproof qualities.

In strength tests, composite doors excel, which is reassuring for security.

How is a UPVC door different?

Plastic is the lead material used to construct a UPVC door, which has less depth than a composite door frame – UPVC doors tend to be about 28mm thick compared to a 44mm thickness with composite doors.

Out of the two, UPVC doors win for affordability, mostly because they don’t harness as many materials in their manufacturing.

Although a cheaper option, UPVC doors offer fantastic energy efficiency and security, so they’re not to be dismissed as a possible front door solution.

How much maintenance do they require?

Very little upkeep suffices to preserve the look and performance of both doors. Around every four months, wipe the frames clean using a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Neglect use of solvent based cleaners or abrasive materials to avoid damage.

Lubricating the components only needs to be done annually e.g. hinges, locks, handle and hardware.

Prevent water ingress into the seals by keeping the threshold and door’s drainage holes clear of any debris – it’s advisable to do this after heavy downpours.
